Beta-Adrenergic Blockers

Beta-Adrenergic Blockers

Beta-blockers manage hypertension and heart failure by blocking the effects of epinephrine, reducing heart rate and blood pressure.

Nursing Priorities

  • Always check apical pulse and blood pressure before administration.
  • Hold medication if heart rate is less than 60 bpm or systolic BP is less than 90-100 mmHg.
  • Educate patient on slow position changes to prevent orthostatic hypotension.
  • Monitor for bronchospasm, especially in patients with a history of asthma or COPD.

Patient Education

  • Do not abruptly discontinue therapy to avoid rebound hypertension.
  • Monitor daily weights and report weight gain of more than 2-3 lbs per day.
  • Check blood glucose frequently if diabetic, as beta-blockers can mask hypoglycemia symptoms.
