ACE Inhibitors
ACE inhibitors reduce blood pressure by inhibiting the conversion of Angiotensin I to Angiotensin II.
Adverse Effects
- Persistent dry cough is a hallmark side effect.
- Angioedema (swelling of face/lips/tongue) is a medical emergency.
- First-dose orthostatic hypotension common; teach patient to rise slowly.
- Hyperkalemia risk due to decreased aldosterone secretion.
Clinical Nursing Tips
- Monitor BP and pulse before administration.
- Advise against potassium supplements or potassium-sparing diuretics.
- Check for pregnancy; these drugs are teratogenic.
