Anorexia Nervosa

An eating disorder characterized by self-starvation, intense fear of gaining weight, and a distorted body image.
Physical Assessment
- Monitor for bradycardia, hypotension, and hypothermia
- Check for electrolyte imbalances, specifically hypokalemia
- Assess for lanugo, dry skin, and amenorrhea
- Monitor weight daily at the same time in the same clothing
Immediate Priorities
- Prioritize medical stabilization and refeeding
- Monitor for Refeeding Syndrome during initial nutrition therapy
- Implement structured meal times with staff supervision
Psychosocial Support
- Avoid focusing solely on food during interaction
- Promote realistic goal setting for weight gain
