Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD)

A disorder characterized by intrusive, unwanted thoughts (obsessions) and repetitive behaviors (compulsions) performed to reduce anxiety.

Nursing Approach

  • Initially allow time for rituals to prevent severe anxiety or panic
  • Gradually limit the time allowed for rituals as the patient progresses
  • Provide structure and support to help the patient engage in daily activities
  • Avoid judging or criticizing the need for the rituals

Therapeutic Goals

  • Help patient recognize the irrationality of the thoughts
  • Use anxiety-reducing techniques like deep breathing
  • Support Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and exposure therapy
