Hypoglycemic Crisis
Blood glucose below 70 mg/dL requiring immediate correction to prevent brain damage.
Immediate Action
- If conscious and alert: Administer 15g fast-acting carbs (juice, glucose tabs).
- If unconscious or NPO: Administer 50% Dextrose IV push or Glucagon IM/SC.
- Re-assess blood glucose every 15 minutes.
Follow-up Care
- Provide complex carbohydrate and protein snack once stable.
- Investigate cause (e.g., missed meal, excessive insulin dose).
- Educate on monitoring and identifying early symptoms.
