Liver Function Tests (LFTs)
Enzymes and proteins used to assess hepatic integrity and function.
Key Markers
- ALT: 7–56 U/L (more specific to the liver)
- AST: 10–40 U/L
- Albumin: 3.5–5.0 g/dL
- Bilirubin: 0.1–1.2 mg/dL
Clinical Correlations
- Elevated ALT/AST indicate hepatocellular damage
- Decreased albumin indicates chronic liver disease/malnutrition
- Elevated bilirubin manifests as jaundice and pruritus
- Monitor for signs of hepatic encephalopathy with severe elevation
