Cardiac Biomarkers (Troponin)
Highly sensitive proteins released into the bloodstream following myocardial injury.
Clinical Values
- Troponin I: < 0.05 ng/mL
- Troponin T: < 0.01 ng/mL
- Levels rise within 3–4 hours of injury
- Levels remain elevated for 10–14 days
Nursing Interventions
- Serial labs are essential to trend values
- Elevated levels indicate myocardial infarction (MI)
- Monitor for chest pain, diaphoresis, and dyspnea
- Initiate cardiac precautions and continuous EKG monitoring
