Sodium-Restricted Diet

A dietary regimen usually prescribed for patients with hypertension, heart failure, or renal insufficiency.

Dietary Teaching

  • Restrict sodium intake to 2,000mg or less per day.
  • Avoid processed foods, canned soups, deli meats, and pickles.
  • Read nutrition labels for 'hidden' sodium sources.
  • Use herbs, spices, lemon juice, or vinegar to enhance flavor.

Clinical Implications

  • Daily weights are the most accurate monitor for fluid retention.
  • Assess for peripheral edema and crackles in the lungs.
  • Monitor blood pressure trends.
