Dysphagia Management

Dietary and safety interventions for patients with difficulty swallowing, aimed at preventing aspiration.

Safety Interventions

  • Keep the patient upright at 90 degrees during and 30-60 mins after meals.
  • Perform oral hygiene before meals to stimulate swallow reflex.
  • Avoid straws as they increase bolus speed and aspiration risk.
  • Add thickening agents to liquids per speech therapy recommendations.

Client Assessment

  • Monitor for 'wet' or 'gurgly' voice post-swallow.
  • Assess for pocketing of food in the buccal cavity.
  • Check for coughing, choking, or throat clearing during meals.
