Parenteral Nutrition (PN)

Intravenous administration of complex nutrients for patients with non-functional GI tracts or severe malnutrition.

Administration Safety

  • Use a dedicated central line or PICC for hypertonic solutions.
  • Must be administered via a micron filter.
  • Change IV tubing every 24 hours to prevent infection.
  • Monitor blood glucose every 4-6 hours due to high dextrose content.

Nursing Management

  • If TPN bag empties, hang 10% Dextrose to prevent rebound hypoglycemia.
  • Assess daily weights and intake/output.
  • Monitor serum electrolytes, LFTs, and BUN/creatinine.
  • Observe insertion site for phlebitis or signs of infection.
