Enteral Nutrition (EN)
The delivery of nutrients directly into the GI tract via a tube for patients with a functional gut who cannot ingest food orally.
Nursing Considerations
- Verify tube placement via X-ray before initial feeding.
- Elevate head of bed to 30-45 degrees to prevent aspiration.
- Check gastric residual volumes every 4-6 hours if ordered.
- Flush tubes with 30mL water before/after medications or bolus feeds.
Complications to Monitor
- Aspiration pneumonia (most serious risk).
- Diarrhea due to high osmolality or rapid infusion.
- Hyperglycemia related to carbohydrate content.
- Tube displacement or occlusion.
