Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder

PTSD is a disorder that develops in some people who have experienced a shocking, scary, or dangerous event.
Cardinal Symptoms
- Intrusion: Flashbacks, nightmares, distressing memories.
- Avoidance: Staying away from trauma reminders.
- Hyperarousal: Exaggerated startle response, irritability, sleep issues.
- Negative alterations in cognition/mood (numbing, detachment).
Nursing Interventions
- Build trust and provide a safe environment.
- Do not force the patient to discuss trauma details before they are ready.
- Teach grounding techniques (e.g., naming objects in the room).
- Encourage participation in support groups.
