Bipolar Disorder (Manic Episode)
Bipolar disorder involves cycling between periods of intense mania and severe depression.
Acute Manic Assessment
- Inflated self-esteem or grandiosity.
- Decreased need for sleep (e.g., feels rested after 3 hours).
- Pressured speech, flight of ideas, and distractibility.
- Excessive involvement in pleasurable activities with high potential for painful consequences.
Nursing Priorities
- Maintain safety due to impulsivity and poor judgment.
- Provide high-calorie, finger foods that can be eaten on the go.
- Set firm, consistent limits on manipulative behavior.
- Minimize environmental stimuli to reduce agitation.
