Schizophrenia Management
Schizophrenia is a chronic psychotic disorder characterized by disturbances in thought, perception, and behavior.
Clinical Presentation
- Positive symptoms: Hallucinations, delusions, disorganized speech.
- Negative symptoms: Avolition, alogia, anhedonia, social withdrawal.
- Cognitive symptoms: Impaired executive function, attention, and memory.
Nursing Interventions
- Establish a therapeutic, non-judgmental environment.
- Do not reinforce hallucinations; state 'I do not hear the voices, but I understand they are real to you'.
- Focus on reality-based topics and activities to minimize withdrawal.
- Ensure medication adherence, monitoring for extrapyramidal side effects.
