Intussusception
A condition where a portion of the intestine telescopes into another, leading to obstruction and potential ischemia.
Classic Presentation
- Sudden onset of severe, intermittent abdominal pain
- Drawing up of knees to chest
- Stool mixed with blood and mucus ('currant jelly' stool)
- Palpable sausage-shaped abdominal mass
Treatment
- Air or saline enema for reduction
- Monitor for signs of bowel perforation (fever, peritonitis)
- Prepare for surgical intervention if enema is unsuccessful
