A lateral curvature of the spine that may progress during the adolescent growth spurt.
Screening
- Forward bend test (Adams test) to observe rib hump
- Scoliometer measurement of trunk rotation
- Radiographic confirmation with Cobb angle
Nursing Care for Bracing
- Brace must be worn 23 hours a day for effectiveness
- Wear a soft shirt under the brace to prevent skin irritation
- Monitor skin integrity over pressure points
- Encourage exercises to strengthen back and abdominal muscles
