Oxygen Delivery Systems
Oxygen is a medication that requires careful titration based on pulse oximetry and arterial blood gases.
Common Devices
- Nasal Cannula: 1-6 L/min (24-44% FiO2).
- Simple Mask: 5-8 L/min (40-60% FiO2).
- Non-Rebreather Mask: 10-15 L/min (up to 95% FiO2).
- Venturi Mask: Delivers precise, controlled FiO2.
Safety Precautions
- Post 'No Smoking' signs in the room.
- Avoid electrical appliances that spark.
- Inspect skin behind ears for breakdown from tubing.
- Humidify oxygen if flow rate exceeds 4 L/min.
