Urinary Catheterization
Indwelling catheters increase the risk for Catheter-Associated Urinary Tract Infections (CAUTI).
Nursing Care
- Use sterile technique during insertion.
- Keep drainage bag below the level of the bladder.
- Secure tubing to prevent pulling on the meatus.
- Provide routine perineal care at least daily.
Removal Protocol
- Remove as soon as clinically indicated.
- Deflate balloon completely before withdrawal.
- Instruct patient to take a deep breath during removal.
- Monitor for first void within 6-8 hours post-removal.
