Nasogastric Tube Care
NG tubes are used for gastric decompression, medication administration, or enteral feeding.
Nursing Procedures
- Verify placement via X-ray before initial use.
- Check pH of gastric aspirate (usually < 5.0).
- Maintain semi-Fowler's position (at least 30-45 degrees).
- Flush with 30mL of water before and after medications.
Complication Prevention
- Monitor for abdominal distention and bowel sounds.
- Check residual volume per facility policy.
- Ensure nares are clean and the tube is securely taped.
- Stop feeding if the patient exhibits respiratory distress.
