Validity and Reliability
Validity and reliability are the twin pillars used to evaluate the accuracy and consistency of research instruments.
Validity
- The extent to which an instrument measures what it is intended to measure.
- Content validity: Does the instrument cover the full range of the concept?
- Construct validity: Does the instrument measure the theoretical concept?
Reliability
- The consistency and stability of the measurement over time.
- Test-retest reliability: Stability of scores across multiple administrations.
- Internal consistency: Cronbach’s alpha measures how well items on a test correlate.
