The process of informing participants of the research purpose, risks, and benefits to ensure autonomous decision-making.
Core Requirements
- Disclosure: Ensuring the subject understands the purpose, procedure, and risks.
- Comprehension: Information must be provided in language the subject understands.
- Voluntariness: Consent must be given without coercion or undue influence.
- Right to Withdraw: Participants may leave the study at any time without penalty.
Vulnerable Populations
- Special protections are required for children, prisoners, pregnant women, and the cognitively impaired.
- Assent is required from minors in addition to parental consent.
