Qualitative vs. Quantitative Research
Distinguishing between study types is critical for selecting the appropriate research methodology to answer a clinical question.
Quantitative Research
- Focuses on objective data and numerical measurement.
- Tests hypotheses and explores cause-and-effect relationships.
- Common designs: Experimental, quasi-experimental, correlational, descriptive.
- Utilizes statistical analysis to determine significance.
Qualitative Research
- Focuses on subjective experiences, perceptions, and human phenomena.
- Data collection: Interviews, focus groups, observation, field notes.
- Goal: Understanding the 'why' or 'how' of human behavior.
- Analysis: Thematic coding and narrative synthesis.
