Chronic Heart Failure
Clinical syndrome resulting from structural or functional cardiac disorders that impair the ability of the ventricle to fill or eject blood.
Clinical Manifestations
- Dyspnea on exertion and orthopnea
- Bilateral peripheral edema and jugular venous distention
- S3 heart sound (ventricular gallop)
- Crackles on lung auscultation
Nursing Management
- Monitor daily weights: report gain of >3 lbs in 2 days
- Maintain sodium-restricted diet and fluid restriction
- Administer loop diuretics (e.g., furosemide) as ordered
- Monitor potassium levels when using potassium-wasting diuretics
