Acute Myocardial Infarction (AMI)
A life-threatening event resulting from coronary artery occlusion leading to myocardial ischemia and necrosis.
Priority Assessments
- Assess for crushing substernal chest pain radiating to jaw or left arm
- Monitor 12-lead ECG for ST-segment elevation or depression
- Evaluate cardiac biomarkers: Troponin I and T are gold standards
- Observe for signs of cardiogenic shock: hypotension, tachycardia, low urine output
Nursing Interventions
- Administer oxygen to maintain SpO2 >94%
- Administer sublingual nitroglycerin, aspirin, and morphine if ordered
- Maintain strict bed rest to reduce myocardial oxygen demand
- Prepare for emergent reperfusion therapy like PCI or thrombolytics
