Electrolyte Transport Mechanisms

Transport across cell membranes maintains the electrochemical gradients essential for cellular function.
Transport Types
- Passive transport: Osmosis and diffusion down a concentration gradient.
- Facilitated diffusion: Use of carrier proteins without energy.
- Active transport: Sodium-Potassium pump requiring ATP.
Clinical Application
- Sodium-Potassium pump failure leads to cell swelling and edema.
- Digoxin inhibits the Na+/K+ pump to increase myocardial contractility.
Nursing Monitoring
- Monitor serum K+ levels in patients taking diuretics or cardiac meds.
