Protein Denaturation
Protein structure determines function; denaturation is the loss of secondary, tertiary, or quaternary structure.
Causes of Denaturation
- High fever causing protein structural breakdown.
- Extreme pH fluctuations in systemic circulation.
- Exposure to heavy metals or chemical toxins.
Clinical Implications
- Enzyme dysfunction leads to metabolic failure.
- Structural damage to cell membranes causes cellular leakage.
- Monitor for multi-organ failure in patients with extreme hyperthermia.
