Mitochondrial Function
The mitochondria are the powerhouse of the cell, serving as the site for the Krebs cycle and oxidative phosphorylation.
ATP Production
- Electron Transport Chain (ETC) requires oxygen as the final electron acceptor.
- Oxidative phosphorylation generates the majority of cellular ATP.
- Mitochondrial DNA is maternally inherited.
Clinical Correlation
- Hypoxia leads to ATP depletion and cellular injury/death.
- Mitochondrial toxins can cause metabolic crisis.
