Introduction to Organic Chemistry
Lipids and Fatty Acids

Lipids are hydrophobic organic compounds vital for cellular structure, energy storage, and signaling.
Types of Lipids
- Saturated fats: No double bonds, solid at room temperature.
- Unsaturated fats: Contain one or more double bonds, often liquid (oils).
- Phospholipids: Amphipathic molecules forming the lipid bilayer of cell membranes.
Clinical Relevance
- Role in cardiovascular health: saturated fats contribute to LDL accumulation.
- Essential fatty acids (Omega-3/6) are critical for neurological function and inflammation regulation.
