Common Diagnostic Suffixes

These suffixes identify the methods used to visualize or measure internal body structures.

Diagnostic Suffixes

  • -scopy: visual examination using an instrument
  • -gram: record or image produced
  • -graphy: the process of producing an image
  • -centesis: surgical puncture to remove fluid

Practical Examples

  • Colonoscopy: visual exam of the large intestine
  • Electrocardiogram (ECG): recording of electrical heart activity
  • Mammography: radiographic imaging of breasts
  • Thoracentesis: puncturing the chest wall to drain pleural fluid
