Seizure Management
The clinical protocol for ensuring patient safety during and after a neurological seizure event.
During Seizure
- Protect head and keep airway patent
- Do not restrain the patient
- Do not place objects in the mouth
- Turn patient to the side to prevent aspiration
Post-Ictal Phase
- Assess for respiratory distress and hypoxia
- Keep environment calm and dim lighting
- Reorient the patient slowly as they regain consciousness
Documentation
- Note time of onset and duration
- Document behavior/movements observed
- Record the post-ictal level of consciousness
