Urinary Incontinence

Urinary Incontinence

Urinary incontinence is a significant quality of life issue, not a normal consequence of aging.

Types

  • Stress: Leakage with increased abdominal pressure.
  • Urge: Sudden strong desire to void followed by leakage.
  • Functional: Inability to reach toilet due to physical or cognitive barriers.
  • Overflow: Bladder over-distension causing constant dribbling.

Management

  • Implement bladder training schedules (timed voiding).
  • Pelvic floor muscle exercises (Kegels).
  • Ensure environmental accessibility (raised toilet seats, clear paths).
  • Monitor fluid intake timing to prevent nocturia.
