Post-Operative Care in Elderly
Surgical recovery in the elderly is more complex due to decreased physiological reserve.
Priority Risks
- Postoperative delirium (often due to anesthesia or pain meds).
- Atelectasis and pneumonia due to shallow breathing.
- Venous thromboembolism (VTE) due to mobility impairment.
- Hypothermia leading to impaired wound healing.
Nursing Care
- Early mobilization to prevent deconditioning.
- Frequent pulmonary hygiene (incentive spirometry).
- Monitor intake/output strictly to avoid fluid overload.
- Manage pain to facilitate movement without over-sedation.
