Elder Abuse Recognition
Nurses are mandated reporters for suspected abuse, neglect, or exploitation of vulnerable seniors.
Signs of Abuse/Neglect
- Unexplained bruises in various stages of healing.
- Poor hygiene, pressure injuries, or malnutrition.
- Patient appears fearful or withdrawn from caregiver.
- Caregiver refuses to allow patient to be seen alone.
Nursing Action
- Perform assessment in private away from the caregiver.
- Document objective findings (location, size, appearance of injuries).
- Report suspicions to state agencies or social services per protocol.
- Maintain a non-judgmental approach to gather information.
