A disorder that develops after exposure to a traumatic event, involving re-experiencing symptoms and avoidance.

Key Symptoms

  • Intrusive memories and flashbacks
  • Avoidance of trauma-related stimuli
  • Negative alterations in mood or cognition
  • Hyperarousal and hypervigilance

Nursing Care

  • Establish trust and rapport
  • Maintain a safe, non-threatening environment
  • Encourage group therapy to reduce isolation
  • Facilitate grounding techniques during flashbacks

Patient Teaching

  • Explain that symptoms are a normal response to abnormal events
  • Teach healthy coping mechanisms to manage triggers
  • Encourage follow-up with specialized trauma therapy
