Anorexia Nervosa
An eating disorder characterized by weight loss due to starvation and an intense fear of gaining weight.
Clinical Signs
- Severe restriction of caloric intake
- Distorted body image
- Amenorrhea
- Bradycardia and hypotension
- Lanugo or thinning hair
Nursing Priorities
- Monitor vital signs and electrolyte imbalances (potassium/magnesium)
- Implement a structured refeeding program
- Supervise patient during and after meals to prevent purging
- Set realistic, small weight gain goals
Safety Alerts
- Risk for cardiac dysrhythmias due to hypokalemia
- Observe for secret food hoarding or disposal
- Assess suicide risk periodically
