Bipolar I Disorder
A condition characterized by at least one manic episode, often alternating with major depressive episodes.
Manic Phase Symptoms
- Inflated self-esteem or grandiosity
- Decreased need for sleep
- Pressured speech and flight of ideas
- Excessive involvement in high-risk activities
- Psychomotor agitation
Nursing Interventions
- Provide a low-stimulation environment
- Monitor for nutritional deficiencies due to high activity
- Set firm limits on disruptive or aggressive behaviors
- Provide high-calorie, finger foods for patients in constant motion
Pharmacological Management
- Lithium carbonate for mood stabilization
- Monitor serum lithium levels (therapeutic range 0.6–1.2 mEq/L)
- Instruct on consistent salt and fluid intake
