Schizophrenia
A chronic psychiatric disorder involving a breakdown in the relation between thought, emotion, and behavior.
Positive Symptoms
- Hallucinations (auditory, visual, tactile)
- Delusions (persecutory, grandiose)
- Disorganized speech and thinking
- Bizarre behaviors
Negative Symptoms
- Avolition (lack of motivation)
- Alogia (poverty of speech)
- Affective flattening
- Social withdrawal
Nursing Care
- Use short, clear, and concise communications
- Do not argue with hallucinations or delusions
- Acknowledge the client's feelings while stating your reality
- Administer antipsychotics and monitor for EPS side effects
