Major Depressive Disorder (MDD)
A mood disorder characterized by persistent feelings of sadness and loss of interest in daily activities.
Clinical Manifestations
- Depressed mood for at least two weeks
- Anhedonia (loss of interest)
- Weight changes or appetite disturbance
- Psychomotor agitation or retardation
- Feelings of worthlessness or excessive guilt
Nursing Interventions
- Assess for suicide risk using standardized tools
- Promote self-care activities
- Monitor for effectiveness of antidepressants (SSRIs)
- Encourage therapeutic communication and cognitive restructuring
Safety Priorities
- Ensure a safe environment free from sharps or access to medications
- Implement one-on-one observation if actively suicidal
- Monitor sleep patterns and nutritional intake
