Talcott Parsons' concept defining the social expectations, rights, and obligations granted to individuals when they are formally recognized as ill.
Rights of the Sick
- Exemption from normal social role responsibilities
- Exemption from liability for the illness condition
Obligations of the Sick
- Recognition that being ill is undesirable
- Obligation to seek competent professional help
- Requirement to comply with treatment to recover
Nursing Application
- Assess patient's perception of their own illness severity
- Identify barriers to compliance with the prescribed medical regimen
- Recognize how the sick role impacts patient autonomy and decision-making
- Evaluate social pressure on the patient to return to normal functioning
