Alcohol Withdrawal Syndrome

A set of symptoms occurring in individuals who reduce or cease alcohol intake after prolonged, heavy use.

Clinical Timeline

  • Early symptoms: tremors, anxiety, tachycardia, and hypertension
  • Potential for seizures within 12-48 hours
  • Delirium Tremens (DTs) may occur 48-96 hours after the last drink

Management

  • Administer benzodiazepines as prescribed to manage withdrawal
  • Perform frequent neurological and vital sign checks (CIWA protocol)
  • Ensure adequate hydration and nutritional support, especially thiamine
  • Monitor for hallucinations and disorientation
