Hyperkalemia Management
Potassium levels >5.0 mEq/L, posing an immediate risk of fatal cardiac dysrhythmias.
Priority Interventions
- Place on continuous cardiac monitor.
- Administer IV Calcium Gluconate to protect the heart (membrane stabilization).
- Administer IV Insulin with Dextrose to shift potassium into cells.
- Administer Kayexalate or loop diuretics as prescribed.
Nursing Monitoring
- Look for peaked T-waves or widened QRS on ECG.
- Monitor serum potassium levels strictly.
- Assess for muscle weakness and cramping.
