Airway Obstruction Management

The highest priority in patient care, as hypoxia leads to cardiac arrest rapidly.

Assessment Findings

  • Stridor, wheezing, or silent chest.
  • Use of accessory muscles and retraction.
  • Decreased SpO2 and cyanosis.

Nursing Interventions

  • Position patient in high-Fowler's if conscious, or recovery position if unconscious.
  • Perform suctioning if secretions are audible.
  • Prepare for emergency intubation or cricothyrotomy if obstruction is irreversible.
  • Maintain spinal precautions if trauma is suspected.
