Triage Principles: Disaster Management
Principles of sorting patients based on the severity of injury and potential for survival in mass casualty incidents.
Color-Coded Triage
- Red (Immediate): Life-threatening injuries but high potential for survival with rapid intervention.
- Yellow (Delayed): Serious injuries that require care within hours, not minutes.
- Green (Minimal): The 'walking wounded'; injuries are minor.
- Black (Expectant): Dead or dying; limited resources preclude intensive care for these patients.
Prioritization Strategy
- Assess for airway, breathing, and circulation (ABC) first.
- Utilize the SALT triage protocol for rapid assessment.
- In mass casualty, the goal is the greatest good for the greatest number of people.
