IV Flow Rate Calculation
Determining the rate at which IV fluids should infuse to ensure patient safety and fluid balance.
The Formula (mL/hr)
- Total Volume (mL) / Time (hours) = Rate (mL/hr).
- Use this for electronic infusion pumps.
- Verify the pump setting against the physician's order.
The Formula (gtt/min)
- Total Volume (mL) x Drop Factor (gtt/mL) / Time (minutes) = Flow Rate (gtt/min).
- Used for gravity drip infusions.
- Drop factor is located on the IV tubing packaging (e.g., 10, 15, 20, or 60 gtt/mL).
