Basic Metabolic Panel (BMP)
A group of tests that measure electrolytes, kidney function, and blood glucose.
Critical Values
- Sodium: 135–145 mEq/L
- Potassium: 3.5–5.0 mEq/L
- Glucose: 70–100 mg/dL (fasting)
- BUN: 10–20 mg/dL
- Creatinine: 0.6–1.2 mg/dL
Clinical Significance
- High potassium poses cardiac dysrhythmia risk
- BUN/Creatinine ratio helps differentiate prerenal from renal failure
- Hyponatremia may cause confusion and neurological changes
- Hyperglycemia correlates with infection risk and delayed healing
