Complete Blood Count (CBC)
A fundamental screening test that evaluates the cellular components of blood to identify hematological conditions.
Key Components
- WBC: 5,000–10,000/mm3 - indicates infection or inflammation
- RBC: 4.2–6.1 million/mm3 - identifies anemia or polycythemia
- Hgb: 12–18 g/dL - oxygen carrying capacity of the blood
- Hct: 37%–52% - percentage of blood volume occupied by RBCs
- Platelets: 150,000–400,000/mm3 - monitors clotting ability
Nursing Implications
- Assess for signs of bleeding if platelets are low
- Monitor for signs of infection if WBC is low (neutropenia)
- Review history for anticoagulants or recent surgery
- Evaluate Hgb/Hct for symptoms of fatigue or dyspnea
