Epiglottitis
A life-threatening medical emergency characterized by the inflammation and swelling of the epiglottis, typically caused by H. influenzae.
Clinical Signs
- Drooling, dysphagia, and dysphonia
- Tripod positioning
- High fever and rapid respiratory distress
Nursing Priorities
- Maintain airway patency at all times
- Keep the child calm to prevent airway collapse
- Prepare for emergency intubation/tracheostomy
- Avoid inspection of the throat with a tongue blade until airway is secure
