Abruptio Placentae
The premature separation of the placenta from the uterine wall before the fetus is delivered.
Clinical Presentation
- Sudden onset of dark red vaginal bleeding
- Severe abdominal pain and uterine tenderness
- Uterus may feel rigid or board-like
- Fetal distress or demise
Risk Factors
- Maternal hypertension
- Trauma
- Cocaine use
- Short umbilical cord
Immediate Nursing Actions
- Assess for signs of maternal shock
- Prepare for emergency birth
- Start large-bore IV access for fluid resuscitation
- Administer oxygen and monitor vital signs
