Placenta Previa
A condition where the placenta implants in the lower uterine segment, potentially covering the internal cervical os.
Clinical Presentation
- Painless, bright red vaginal bleeding
- Often discovered during routine ultrasound
- Uterus remains soft and non-tender
Contraindications
- Vaginal exams (NEVER perform a vaginal exam on a patient with suspected or known placenta previa)
- Sexual intercourse
- Douching
Nursing Management
- Bed rest with bathroom privileges
- Continuous fetal monitoring
- Monitor blood loss closely
- Prepare for possible cesarean section
