Preeclampsia
A pregnancy complication characterized by high blood pressure and signs of damage to another organ system, most often the liver and kidneys.
Clinical Manifestations
- Blood pressure >= 140/90 mmHg on two occasions at least 4 hours apart after 20 weeks gestation
- Proteinuria
- New onset visual disturbances or severe headache
- Epigastric or right upper quadrant pain
Nursing Interventions
- Administer Magnesium Sulfate to prevent seizures
- Monitor deep tendon reflexes and respiratory rate hourly
- Maintain a quiet, non-stimulating environment
- Monitor for signs of pulmonary edema or decreased urine output
Magnesium Toxicity Antidote
- Calcium Gluconate is the antidote for magnesium sulfate toxicity
- Signs of toxicity: absent DTRs, RR < 12, decreased LOC, oliguria
